New qualifications at levels 2 and 3, which will replace the current NVQs in optical retail, will be completed by the end of the year according to a spokesperson for the Skills for Health (SfH) initiative.

Optics was included in the government programme, which is responsible for reviewing and developing qualifications, national occupational standards and competencies, after the Optical Sector Steering Group, a sub-committee of the GOC's education committee, lobbied for inclusion in 2009.

The group aims to transition NVQs in optical retail to the new qualifications and develop a new apprenticeship framework for the workforce.
