Optician has learned of the sad passing of Jan-Karel Querido, pictured, a respected optometrist, examiner and assessor for the College of Optometrists for more than 25 years.
Querido studied optometry at Aston University from 1969 because optometry was much less developed professionally in his home country, the Netherlands, at that time.
After completing his pre-reg and gaining fellowships at Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, Querido moved to the north-east with his wife and young family and set up his own practice in 1977, later embarking on a three year MSc at Bradford and establishing the North East CL Society.
Working out of two practices in Killingworth and Heaton, Querido collaborated with many well-known optometrists and also found time to deliver two Vision Aid Overseas trips to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
‘Jan-Karel was extremely well-loved and well-respected in his field. Known for his straight talking, can-do attitude and his sense of humour,’ said Nicholas Rumney, senior optometrist and chair at Hereford-based BBR Optometry and a co-examiner at the College.
‘His diagnostic skills and attention to detail undoubtedly saved vision and lives that others might have missed and we have all learned from him.’
Rumney, who worked as an examiner alongside Querido since 1988, added: ‘I was struck by his clarity of thought, attention to detail and intellectual rigour.'
