Optometrist John Clenton, who had practices in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, has died at the age of 81.
Born in Walsall, his career in optics spanned over 60 years, beginning in a glazing factory while he studied optometry at Aston University in the evenings. Clenton built up several practices after taking a partnership in Mansfield in the 1950s. He was described as a pioneer of contact lenses – often trying out new designs and materials himself.
Earlier this year he lost his wife of 58 years. He leaves behind his practitioner daughter Karen Wheatley, granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
