Obituary: Philip CooksonThe FMO is sorry to report the death of Lieutenant-Commander Philip Cookson, 82 (pictured), secretary of the UK optical trade association from 1988 to the mid-1990s.

Cookson, from Bristol, had a distinguished career as a submarine commander, then chief operations officer for the Sultan of Oman’s navy, before returning to the UK.

The FMO said he had a hands-on approach to staging its trade shows and was a driving force behind the status of Optrafair as the leading UK optical show. ‘Philip was a warm and charming man who always had a twinkle in his eye but at the same time he was shrewd and efficient, which, given his background was not surprising. He did an excellent job for the FMO,’ said Kingsley Sleep, FMO director.
