OCT powers up at Silverstone

Practitioners from around the UK braved the snowy conditions to converge on Silverstone racing track earlier this week to hear about OCTs.

The event, organised by the National Eyecare Group (NEG), was based around an exhibition which included all the major suppliers of OCT technology in the UK, allowing delegates the opportunity to compare the various features of available instruments.

There was also a chance to look at the new non-contact Meibomian Gland Analyser from Topcon.

Speakers included ophthalmologist Mike Potts who reminded optometrists of the importance in helping and monitoring the very many dry macular degeneration patients for whom hospital management is not appropriate. The OCT and the ability to assess macular pigment both represented important opportunities for optometrists in establishing their practices, claimed Potts.

Simon Wardle of Professional Financial Services explained how charging a fee for every OCT assessment each day easily recouped the original outlay for the instrument in a surprisingly short time.

Pleased with the turnout despite the weather, organiser and director of business development for NEG Phil Mullins said: 'I think we mark the day up as a success.'
