Oklahoma laser ruling

OPTOMETRISTS IN Oklahoma, US, will be authorised to perform laser surgery from November 1, according to a report in CL Spectrum (April).

Optometrists in the state began to perform laser procedures earlier this year but were halted by a district court ruling. The signing of a Senate Bill by the Governor of Oklahoma, quashes that judgement. The bill does not define which laser procedures are permitted but specifically prohibits cosmetic lid surgery, laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (Lasik) and retinal procedures. The bill gives the Oklahoma Board of Examiners in Optometry full responsibility for certifying optometrists in laser surgery. This has met with some opposition. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is reported to be 'exploring all possible avenues that could challenge the legislative decision.'
