Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may protect against retinopathy, reports the July edition of Nature Medicine.
Researchers from the Children's Hospital Boston examined the effect of two omega 3 fatty acids and an omega 6 fatty acid, on the growth of blood vessels in mice. They found that omega 6 fatty acid is linked to a growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, and an increase in omega 3 and a decrease in omega 6 reduced the area of blood vessel loss that eventually led to growth of abnormal vessels.
