Nearly half of adults (46 per cent) who have never had their eyes tested say they are more likely to make their own decision on the state of their eye health or eyesight rather than seek expert opinion, according to new research.

The finding is contained in a new study which was carried out jointly by the College of Optometrists and Optician. The wide-ranging survey of consumer behaviour, motivation and attitudes to eye care and eyewear was conducted by market research company GfK NOP by face-to-face interview of over 1,000 people from August 30 to September 4.

More than one in 10 adults (11 per cent) had never had an eye examination, a similar finding to College/Optician research two years ago (12 per cent). Respondents were asked why they did not have their eyes tested. The main reasons given were that 'I never had a problem with my eyes' or they didn't 'think there was a need to have their sight tested' (46 per cent respectively).
