A York optometrist died after falling down stairs and banging her head on a banister at a hotel after a wine-tasting evening.

Fifty-one-year-old Tessa Louise Groves, who used to run Groves Opticians at Clifton Moor in York, had been sampling wine with her husband at the hotel according to York Newspaper, The Press,

Having booked a room at the hotel during the tasting to avoid having to travel, Mrs Groves decided to retire to her room at 11.30pm, but came downstairs after being unable to find it. After another glass of wine, the couple decided to go to bed an hour later. While her husband chose to wait for the lift, Mrs Groves took the stairs, but turning to speak to her husband, she lost her balance and fell.
