Optometrist Michael O’Kane hosts event to raise awareness of visual loss aids

Optometrist Michael O’Kane has hosted an event to raise awareness of services available to those with visual and hearing loss.

O’Kane, director of Specsavers’ Morningside practice and Optician’s Optometrist of the Year 2018, held the event in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, at the Eric Liddle Centre. The RISE up to the challenge event was also hosted by the International Glaucoma Association, The Macular Society and the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).

OrCams were on display to demonstrate the benefit of medical grade lighting when reading.

O’Kane said: ‘I called this event RISE up to the Challenge as I wanted to bring together the resources, information and support that the leading experts in the field of low vision, hearing impairments, emotional, practical and financial can offer. I want local people to be aware of these services and devices, so that should they, or a loved one, need them at some point, they will be equipped with the correct knowledge.’
