A fitness to practise committee has imposed a warning on optometrist Jane Lai after allegations concerning an examination in 2007 were admitted and found proven.

Lai failed to perform tonometry on a 64-year-old patient whose past routine examinations had identified slightly raised intraocular pressures. She did not perform a visual field assessment, refer the patient or investigate the patient's 'smokiness' of vision or migraines. Lai's assessment of the patient's anterior chamber depth was incorrect, her assessment of the optic disc was considered inaccurate and her record of the consultation was found to be inadequate.

The committee found Lai guilty of deficient professional performance. However, it judged that her current capability and performance is not deficient to a degree which warrants or meets the threshold for a finding of impairment.
