OOs work fewer hours says DoH

New statistics from the Department of Health report that full-time optometrists are putting in the shortest working week for five years, an average of 38 hours 16 minutes.

The figures, from the Sight Test Volume and Workforce Survey 1999-2000, show that for the period 1997-1998, it was 38 hours 32 minutes. For 1994-1995, it was 39 hours 25 minutes. Other findings included 16.177m sight tests were paid for in 1999-2000 (see below), with 32.7 per cent of these tests privately funded. This is the first year's results since the extension of eligibility for NHS sight tests to all people aged 60 or over from 1 April 1999. On average, a full-time optometrist had a standard working week of 38 hours 16 minutes; the average standard week for a part-time optometrist was 18 hours 42 minutes, which equated to 47 per cent of a standard full-time working week. There were 7,397 optometrists in Great Britain in 1999-2000, with 5,268 full time.
