Ophthalmologist struck off AMD treatments

Tribunal removes ophthalmologist Muhammad ‘Bobby’ Qureshi from register

A tribunal has removed high-profile ophthalmologist Muhammad ‘Bobby’ Qureshi from the UK medical register.

Qureshi performed surgeries which he falsely claimed would halt or reverse the symptoms of AMD through implantation of EyeMax mono lenses, a technology that he helped to develop.

The panel found that his treatment of patients was ‘dishonest and misleading’. Twenty-four patients, some of who had spent their life savings on £24k treatment, gave evidence against him.

As medical director of the private London Eye Hospital, Qureshi allowed the use of high-pressure selling techniques to vulnerable and elderly patients, inadequately explained risks and overstated the benefits of procedures. The London Eye Hospital is now under different management.
