Optegra Eye Sciences, the research arm of Optegra eye hospital, has appointed a new research associate.

Dr Irene Siso-Fuertes is a qualified Spanish optometrist who will contribute to research within Optegra’s seven specialist hospitals. She will support the team in producing data around the patient experience of refractive lens exchange and will assist in CET events.

Having graduated in 2010, Dr Siso-Fuertes went on to do a Masters in Advanced Optometry and Vision Sciences – in which she was awarded best transcript of records – and was then appointed as a fellow of the AGEYE Marie Curie Initial Training Network, a prestigious European programme.

She completed her PhD at The University of Manchester, where she focused on investigating the age-related changes in the optics of the human eye.

‘In Spain, the scope of optometry practice is not as broad as in the UK and so the opportunities are limited,’ said Dr Siso-Fuertes. ‘I have loved my studies and research projects with really inspiring professors, and felt that pursuing a career in research in a country like the UK, where optometry is such a well-established and respected profession, would widen my career opportunities.’

Dr Siso-Fuertes is already registered with the GOC so will also be able to engage in clinical work in the UK.
