A consortium of optical bodies have joined forces to cut carbon emissions and waste, and establish sustainable practices, with an aim to meet UK climate change targets.
Partners have agreed to implement changes by late May, ready for the next intended meeting where each will share a review of impacts, lessons learnt and ideas for improved practices, according to the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).
Association of Optometrists’ (AOP) chief executive, Adam Sampson, said: ‘All aspects of the industry must do their part to take vital action on environmental sustainability. We’re pleased to be part of this group and to be looking at the critical steps to reduce waste and improve sustainability to support our members, and the wider profession, to set and reach tangible goals.’
The group consists of ABDO, AOP, BCLA, The College of Optometrists, the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers (ACLM), The Optical Suppliers Association, The Association for Eye Care Providers, and optical consultancy Sightcare.
Simon Rodwell, secretary general at ACLM, added: ‘ACLM contact lens manufacturers are committed to achieving long-term environmental sustainability, as well as supporting practitioners and wearers to do the same.’
All in the sector are encouraged to get involved in the collaborative pledge. This is in alignment with UK targets to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035.
