As of April Fool’s Day 2016 all optical professionals will have to abide by a set of standards approved by the GOC during a Council meeting last week to replace its current code of conduct.
But for individuals working in practice this is no laughing matter.
In nine months time, all GOC registrants must declare they have read a 19 point list of standards ranging from respecting patient confidentiality to ensuring equipment is hygienic and has been appropriately maintained. Registrants will also have to do at least one piece of CET on standards as part of the 2016-18 cycle.
A marginally shorter 18 point list drafted out for students was one just one bone of contention raised by the optical bodies.
