An awareness campaign warning against the danger of unnecessary use of antibiotics has been backed by the Optical Confederation.

A statement by the OC encouraged optical professionals to pledge via social media that primary care optometrists were committed to safe prescribing, using the hashtag #AntibioticGuardian.

This included all UK optometrists who have access to some therapeutics to manage minor eye conditions and independent prescriber (IP) optometrists able to prescribe licensed medicine to treat the eye and surrounding tissues.

The WHO and UK government have each warned that overuse of antibiotics can lead to drug resistant strains of disease that mean even routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous, the statement added.
