Updated guidance for patients on Universal Credit, the single payment system which has replaced income-related benefits system for those looking for work or on low incomes, has been issued by the Optical Confederation.
Many people receiving Universal Credit are entitled to an NHS sight test and assistance towards the cost of spectacles or contact lenses.
Practitioners have been reminded that as with other entitlements, the patient is responsible for making it known that they are in receipt of the benefit and should have an award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or their local Jobcentre bearing their name - either as recipient or partner or child of recipient.
