A report by the BBC television programme Watchdog has stated that in visits to Optical Express clinics, the risks associated with laser surgery were 'often downplayed' by its staff.

The report alleged that when a researcher asked 'In terms of the actual treatment, is there anything to actually worry about?' he was told by an optometrist: 'Not at all.' When another researcher asked: 'Is there anything I should be worried about really in terms of procedure and all that type of stuff?' The counsellor replied: 'Not at all. There's nothing to worry about.'

According to the programme at one clinic any potential danger was dismissed by a counsellor who said the procedure was '100 per cent safe'. Professor David Gartry of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists commented: 'Well certainly it's very misleading to say it's 100 per cent safe. There is no surgical procedure that I'm aware of that's 100 per cent safe.'
