Optical Express releases warning about effect of prosecco on eyes

Optical Express issues warning about the effect that prosecco has on eyes

Optical Express has issued a warning about the effect that prosecco has on eyes.

This has followed the recent research that Britain consumes more bottles of prosecco than anywhere else in the world, with a glass of the fizzy drink containing four grams of sugar.

Clinical services director at Optical Express, Stephen Hannan said: ‘Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can cause slower pupil reactions resulting in temporarily blurred vision, while long term excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to a number of sight threatening eye conditions.

‘Too much sugar can also lead to the development of cataracts, one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK and even age-related macular degeneration where the retina dramatically deteriorates causing blurred vision and visual distortion.’
