An Optical Express study has revealed that five out of six novelty Halloween contact lenses it tested failed basic quality and safety tests.

Optometrists learned that despite 46% of study participants being aware of potential corneal abrasions and scarring from ill-fitting lenses, 33% of those attending a Halloween party will risk their eyesight by wearing them.

Tests carried out on volunteers looked at the fit and comfort of the six contact lenses as well as packaging and instructions for use.

Stephen Hannan, Optical Express’ clinical director, said: ‘Some of the cases we see are frightening, with patients sharing lenses with friends, wearing the same pair year after year well past the expiry date, and storing them in tap water – all of which can have devastating effects.
