David Blunkett has been appointed as an independent chairman for collaboration talks between three blindness charities. The chief executives of Action for Blind People, RNIB and Seeability plus nominated trustees will work with Blunkett to deliver improved sustainable services for blind people through closer working.
Sandwell Trading Standards has issued a warning about illegally sold cosmetic contact lenses after its officers found the items for sale in several shops in the borough. Officers are working closely with the General Optical Council to identify rogue traders in the area, warning that unsuitable lenses can cause corneal ulcers, infections or even blindness.
The Careers in Optics Working Group received positive feedback from a majority of schoolchildren following a pilot last year. On completing the workshops, 77 per cent of pupils said they were more aware of the importance of eye health and 55 per cent said they would recommend optometry and optics as a good career choice. The workshops will be available to schools nationwide in 2011, delivered by practitioners.
