Safilo Group and Fossil Group have renewed their licensing agreement for the design, manufacturing and distribution of Fossil branded optical frames. The companies also announced the addition of sunglasses to the deal, which now runs until December 2018 and extends to global distribution instead of just the US and Canada.

Plans to implement an eye disease patient database in the US have been unveiled by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It is hoped that the IRIS Registry initiative will enable ophthalmologists across the country to review and analyse their own care and compare it to benchmarks. The Academy estimated that the register would have 20 million patient records within two years.

Sixteen-year-old keratoconous patient James Bowden has become the youngest person to have a laser-assisted corneal graft. The operation was carried out at the Centre for Sight hospital in East Grinstead, West Sussex. Prior to the surgery he was unable to watch television or learn to drive and had to sit his GCSEs using enlarged papers, but was now said to be ‘recovering brilliantly’.

A research team at Moorfields Eye Hospital said it had identified the clinical and social benefits of public and patient involvement. The team focused on two Moorfields patient days on birdshot uveitis, using interviews with patients and professionals. Patients reported that their sense of isolation was reduced, while professionals improved their levels of awareness of the disease.

A three-minute treatment using eye drops and UV light after Lasik eye surgery was carried out for the first time at London Eye Hospital. A statement said the Lasik Xtra treatment spelt the end of complications including regression, infections, corneal sagging and ingrowth of surface cells that in some instances followed laser-eye surgery.
