Optician is publishing a major new textbook on glaucoma detection and management in the coming weeks.
Based on the comprehensive series of articles by Dr Paul Spry and Dr Robert Harper, which were published in Optician recently, the Essential Glaucoma Handbook is a complete guide for the eye care practitioner involved in glaucoma.
Both authors are experienced authorities in the subject area and Spry was one of the optometrist representatives on the NICE advisory panel prior to the launch of the recent guidelines to referral and management.
The book deals first with definitions and classifications of the disease and then covers the assessment and diagnosis of glaucoma. This includes clear guidance on ophthalmoscopy, field assessment and analysis, intraocular pressure measurement and the use of more advanced techniques, such as retinal nerve fibre layer thickness analysis and optical coherence tomography.
These should serve as a useful guide to all in practice including students and allied professionals such as general practitioners with a special interest.
Later chapters focus upon the various management options available in the UK and give clear guidance to the clinician about the various pathways and options available for treatment and what the various treatments are. These chapters will make the book an essential reference for those practitioners aiming to acquire independent prescribing, supplementary prescribing or additional supply status. There is a clear description of the implications for clinicians of the NICE guidelines.
With a foreword by renowned glaucoma authority Professor Stephen Vernon, the book is produced in a handy format suitable for the white coat pocket or the consulting room desk. The text is lavishly illustrated throughout and it is hoped the handbook will be a key text for all with an interest in glaucoma.
This is the first time Optician has published a book in its own right and series and book editor Bill Harvey stated: 'We are all very excited about the launch of this book. I am sure it will rapidly become the key text for optometrists involved in glaucoma screening and management.'
