Optometrist hits world record at the London marathon

Specsavers optometrist Daniel Gallagher achieved a new Guinness World Record by running the London Marathon in a sub-3-hour time while handcuffed to fellow runner Jack Meegan on April 23.

Gallagher (pictured right), who has worked at Lisburn Specsavers practice for two years, raised over £1,000 for the charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, in memory of his grandmother. It was his 8th marathon as part of his aim to run all of the Big 6 Marathons, he also completed the Belfast Marathon a week later.

Gallagher said: ‘Beating a Guiness World Record was great, but whether we achieved it or not, I would have been proud to have run in memory of my granny. When she passed away in October, she was 95 and had suffered with dementia for the last five years of her life.

‘Research has shown that people with dementia can also have visual difficulties because dementia affects the parts of their brain that handle visual information coming from the eyes.’

Leanne Lindsay, optician director at the Lisburn practice, added: ‘We are all so in awe and proud of Daniel for smashing such a difficult target while raising such an impressive amount of money. Not only that, but to take on another marathon a week later! He has inspired us to take on a challenge as a team in the near future.’
