Optometrist and camera enthusiast Nick Rumney shared his efforts at catching the eclipse with Optician last week.
Taking the photos using a tripod in Hereford, his method was to keep his camera left pointing at the sun, but powered off. He said it took twenty shots just pressing delayed shutter time, but he was not concerned about damaging his camera because the shutter was not permanently open. Rumney said he used a Nikon D90 300mm lens under exposed by five stops and on an ISO of 250.
