A Bolton optometrist has quit his family firm following opposition over his links with the British National Party, according to a local newspaper.

A Bolton optometrist has quit his family firm following opposition over his links with the British National Party, according to a local newspaper.

Stewart Clough resigned from Clough's Opticians in Bolton to pursue an alternative career after a local 'hate campaign' against him, reported This is Bolton on March 16.

Clough won 663 votes for the BNP, finishing seventh place when he stood for the local elections in Bury last year.

A spokesman for the practice said: 'The management totally deplores the policies of the British National Party. Many of our 25,000 customers and some past and current employees are from a range of cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

'Clough's has given the local community friendly and professional service for more than 50 years and looks forward to continuing in the same peaceful way.'
