Optometrist Sarah Morgan went on BBC Radio Lancashire’s John Gillmore show last month to inform listeners about the profession.
Morgan likened the clinical role of a high-street OO to that of a paramedic due to their ability to detect general health conditions, such as diabetes, through an eye exam.
She told listeners: ‘The role of optometrist is quite paramedical. In optometry you care for probably the most relied upon sense that humans' have – sight. A lot of general health issues can be picked up from testing the eye.’
She also addressed the misconceptions she said she had encountered surrounding optometrists’ training and qualification.
