Optometrist helps blind patient who had been scammed by a rogue builder

An optometrist went beyond the call of duty by helping a registered blind patient who had been scammed by a rogue builder and left £40,000 out of pocket.

Sarah Marshall, co-director at Specsavers Bicester, stepped in after patient Zoe Elliott-Martin revealed her house extension had been left unfinished.

The builder involved had been declared bankrupt, leaving the family of four out of pocket and their house in an unsafe state.

‘We know Zoe and her family really well and it’s heart-breaking to hear what has happened to her part-finished house,’ said Marshall.

‘Having your home resemble a building site with no sign of it being resolved is bad enough for anyone, but when you factor in Zoe’s eye condition, it’s far from ideal.’

Marshall has helped set up a Go Fund Me page for the family to try and raise the money needed to fix the work, which has so far raised £2,650.
