Optometrist suspended for altering patient records

Littlehampton-based optometrist Rishi Patel has been suspended from the General Optical Council (GOC) register by a GOC fitness to practise committee by reason of misconduct.

Patel was suspended for three months for dishonest and misleading actions in relation to retrospectively amending a patient’s record.

On May 30 2019, when a patient asked Patel about a lump on his eyelid, he said that it was a cyst and offered advice on using a hot compress and lid spray.

On December 6 2020, the patient had a biopsy in relation to the lump and it was diagnosed as a tumour, resulting in surgery.

The patient raised a complaint and on January 18 2021 the registrant accessed and amended the patient’s records.
