One of the AOP's directors will outline the Association's views on optometry's future involvement in diabetic retinopathy screening at a specialist conference later this month.

Trevor Warburton, who is chair of the AOP's professional services committee, will deliver his address at the British Association of Retinal Screeners 2005 conference, which will be held at the Copthorne Tara Hotel, London (September 29-30).

The keynote address of the event will be given by Larry Merin, assistant director of ophthalmology and director of the Vanderbilt Ophthalmic Imaging Center, US.

Other presentations include:

  • 'Diabetic screening message specifications - in plain English', Christian Martin, UK technical development manager for the national screening programme for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in Cheltenham
  • 'What do patients want to know?', Peter Gilbert, patient and chairman, Diabetes UK, Fulham and Hammersmith branch
  • 'Initiating the patient adviser programme' Martin Land, diabetes patient champion, Norwich peers adviser group
  • 'The big picture', Fionna O'Leary, programme manager national screening programme for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy.

    The British Association of Retinal Screeners is an organisation for those primarily involved in providing retinal screening services for people with diabetes.
