Optometry graduates celebrate in Westminster

Over 500 new optometrists were welcomed to the profession by the College of Optometrists across two ceremonies at Central Hall in Westminster on November 12, 2024.  

Friends, family and peers celebrated the achievements of the 2024 newly qualified members in the grade II listed building. 

Dr Gillian Rudduck, president at the College, said: ‘The diploma ceremonies mark a significant milestone in qualified optometrists’ professional careers and also as new members of The College of Optometrists. 

‘As their professional body, the College will ensure they have access to the resources, guidance and professional development needed for them to meet their professional goals. 

‘This is the start of an exciting new chapter for over 500 new optometrists and I extend my congratulations to them all. We wish them every success in their future careers in optometry.’ 

During the ceremony, the College also awarded seven new life fellowships and two new honorary fellowships for their outstanding contributions to the profession or the College.  

Among the life fellows was former clinical editor of Optician, Bill Harvey, as well as: Professor Mark Bullimore, Lisa Donaldson, Professor Nicola Logan, Professor Shaina Pardhan, Professor Nick Rumney, and Dr Margaret Woodhouse.  

The two honorary fellows were Fiona Anderson, president of the International Opticians Association, and Dr Andy Hepworth, immediate past chair of the Optical Suppliers Association.  

Optometrist Amanda Davidson was made fellow by portfolio in recognition of her achievement in the workplace and outstanding contributions to furthering excellence in the practice of optometry. 

The event also included the presentation of the College’s Research Excellence Awards, which recognised outstanding work in the fields of optometry, optics and vision science.
