Orbis’ ninth flight to Mongolia

Patient screening in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, following cataract surgery

Global eye care charity Orbis’ flying eye hospital has travelled to Mongolia for a three-week training project to build the skills of local eye care teams, running until August 22.

The Mongolia Ministry of Health invited Orbis to return for its ninth visit, the first taking place in 1989 and the most recent, in 2018, with virtual training also taking place during the pandemic.

With support from the Alcon Foundation, FedEx and Omega, the training project would guide participants in simulation training, hands-on surgical training and patient care, and ophthalmic workshops at Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport and two hospitals. ‘We are grateful for our partnerships with the Ministry of Health, the National Centre for Maternal and Child Health, and Third Central Hospital. Together, we have been able to increase access to quality eye care throughout the country,’ said Dr Chimgee Chuluunkhuu, country director of Orbis Mongolia.
