Oriel construction starts

A £300m construction contract has been awarded to build Oriel in Camden

A £300m construction contract has been awarded to build Oriel research and education centre in Camden, London.

Demolition of the existing buildings at the site of St Pancras Hospital started at the end of February and construction of the 10-storey, 47,000 sq m centre will begin later this year.

Moorfields Eye Hospital acquired the site from Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust at the beginning of February via a transaction approved by the Secretary of State for Health.

Martin Kuper, chief executive at Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: ‘These latest developments move us firmly into the construction stage of the project.’

Oriel is a joint initiative between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity.
