RNIB and Specsavers urge over 65s to get their eyes tested

More than a third of over 65s unnecessarily risk losing their sight by ignoring tell-tale symptoms, according to a study commissioned by RNIB and Specsavers.

The study found two in five of those over the age of 65 failed to seek professional advice from a doctor or optician despite experiencing symptoms such as black spots, dry or gritty eyes and discomfort in bright lights.

RNIB director of engagement Fazilet Hadi said: ‘All too often people think of deteriorating vision as an inevitable sign of ageing, and don’t seek professional advice when they’re experiencing problems with their vision or their eyes. However, no matter how old you are, it’s important that everyone has an eye test at least every two years, as these can detect the earliest signs of potential problems.’
