Nineteen patients in Devon who had outsourced cataract surgery on the NHS at Mount Stuart Hospital in Torquay have had their cases reviewed after two people attended A&E with complications.

Torbay Hospital was said to have contacted the patients, who were all treated on the same day by Ramsay Health Care, for urgent clinical reviews.

A report published by the BBC stated the consultant responsible had been suspended while an investigation was taking place and that Torbay Hospital the South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group had stopped referrals to Mount Stuart Hospital.

David Sinclair, interim medical director at South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Torbay Hospital, told the Mid Devon Gazette: ‘We identified this problem at an early stage and were able to recall all the patients affected very quickly.’
