Optical professionals have been urged to warn patients who smoke about the damage it may do to their eye health – with a new referral process implemented in Wales.
Research by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has found only one in five smokers in the UK are worried about how smoking will affect their eye health.
Optical staff were asked to promote stop smoking resources and support ahead of No Smoking Day on Wednesday March 11.
Dr Mike Knapton, BHF medical director, said: ‘Smoking speeds up the ageing process, including the ageing of the eyes. Simply put, the best way to reduce the risk of developing conditions that will impact the eye health is to quit smoking.
