Data compiled by recruitment firm Hunter Human Capital has highlighted the regional difference in the salaries of optometrists and dispensing opticians.

The survey, which collected data from over 2,000 optometrists and 700 DOs, showed that optometrists in the South West were generally the highest earners, ahead of those in the South East and Greater London. An optometrist in the South West with between two and three years’ experience could expect to earn over £10,000 more than an optometrist in Scotland.

Starting salaries for optometrists ranged from £29,000 in Scotland, to £34,500 in the South West and £31,000 in Greater London.

A disparity in experienced (over 10 years) optometrists’ salaries was also found, with practitioners in East Anglia found to be earning £52,600, compared to £45,600 in Scotland.

Dispensing opticians’ starting salaries were also affected by a regional variation, with salaries ranging from under £20,000 in Scotland to just over £22,000 in the South West, South East and Greater London combined.
