Peer presents bill that would allow sale of adjustable focus spectacles

A private members bill that would allow the sale of adjustable focus spectacles in the same manner as ready reading glasses has been presented to the House of Lords by Lord Richard Newby.

The Opticians Act 1989 (Amendment) Act 2016 has sought to change subsection 27(2)(c) of the 1989 act with requirements that adjustable focus spectacles have two single vision lenses of adjustable spherical power and each lens of the spectacles may be adjusted repeatedly by the wearer in increments of less than 0.25D. Each lens of the spectacles must also be designed so they cannot be adjusted to a spherical power of more than +4.24D or less than -6.24D.
