Wolfgang Petersen's 1980s U-boat movie Das Boot is the inspiration for Specsaver's latest advertising campaign featuring the catchphrase 'Should've gone to Specsavers'.

The online-only advert shows a WWII U-boat crew subjected to a suspected attack by what turns out to be a misguided whale.

The film, directed by Cris Mudge of Soho-based production company Mustard, was shot on 16mm film at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport.

Specsavers art director Mark de la Rue said: 'Our ads seem to have caught people's imagination and we regularly see bootleg Specsavers ads on the internet. We feel it's time to start taking ownership of that space and a viral is the right format. There is no offer here. It's purely entertainment.'
