Police initiate roadside eye checks

A new police initiative to carry out roadside eye tests came into effect on October 28 as part of a national road safety campaign.

As part of the National Police Chief’s Council’s (NPCC) Operation Dark Night, which ran to Sunday, November 10, roadside vision screenings have begun across the country, according to the Northamptonshire Police.

Inspector Ian Wills, of Northamptonshire Police, said: ‘Ninety per cent of the information a driver uses is visual, so we want to use the roadside screening to raise awareness of the fundamental importance of good eyesight.’

Drivers failing to read a number plate from a 20m distance in daylight risk having their licences revoked under Cassie’s Law legislation, the BBC reported.

Inspector Neil Hutchins, of Humberside Police, said the police has urged everyone to ensure they had regular eye tests as well as checking that friends and older relatives were getting tested regularly, too.

‘As the nights draw in, vulnerable road users can be harder to spot, making good eyesight even more essential for all road users,’ he said.
