Soft contact lens for myopia control in children wins funding

A new soft contact lens for myopia control in children has won funding to be commercialised in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has entered into a licensing arrangement with local start up Vision Science and Technology Co, to further develop its Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact (Disc) lens.

The multi-zone soft contact lens provided clear vision while projecting blurred, out-of-focus images onto the retina to slow down excessive eye growth in myopia.

A statement added that a clinical trial spanning two years, with a sample of 128 subjects, showed the Disc lens slowed the progression of myopia by approximately 60% in Hong Kong school children aged eight to 13. The technology was patented in Australia, the Chinese mainland, the US and various European countries.
