Poor vision and traffic safety linked

A link between poor vision and traffic safety in low and middle-income countries has been identified by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast.

The study found a clear correlation between poor vision and the risk of crashes, as well as a policy gap because most drivers had never had their vision tested.

Professor Nathan Congdon, from Queen’s University Belfast, said most previous research focused on rich countries but a different picture emerged when researchers focused on low and middle-income countries.

‘There are many drivers with poor vision on the roads in these settings, and it seems apparent that they explain an important part of the high number of road traffic accidents occurring there,’ he said.
