Man who lost his eyesight to Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy regains vision

A 55 year-old New York man who lost his eyesight to Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) two decades ago has baffled doctors by regaining most of his vision.

Kevin Coughlin said all he could see was a thick fog, until he saw a ray of sunlight three years ago. His vision kept on improving and in May this year, Coughlin said he saw the face of his guide dog for the first time. He credited a healthy diet, prayer and meditation with the restoration of his vision.

Optician clinical editor Bill Harvey said: ‘The apparent restoration of sight lost through congenital eye disease is very rare and difficult to explain, certainly without a lot more information.
