The report highlighted that directing funds into this area could help the government achieve the objectives outlined in the Darzi review, which aimed to reduce waiting lists and shift care closer to home.
The report, Key Interventions to Transform Eye Care & Eye Health, was supported by the Association of Optometrists (AOP), Fight for Sight, Primary Eyecare Services AND Roche Products.
The data showed the NHS faced increasingly high demand for eye care and eye health services, with some major eye conditions projected to increase in prevalence by 25% over the next decade – around seven times faster than population growth.
