Football clubs in the premier league have been sending scouts equipped with special ‘spying specs’ to opponents’ training sessions, the Daily Mail and Sun have reported.
The £150 glasses have video capabilities and have been used to capture clips of games and training exercises that are not available elsewhere. The ‘spying scouts’ have accessed events and venues by pretending to be opposition fans.
Last month, Championship team Leeds United were fined £200,000 by the Football League for spying on their league opposition. Manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted spying on all of Leeds’ opponents this season.
The Sun reports one source in saying: ‘Some Premier League teams needed more recorded clips of certain game situations than they could get from normal means.
‘They realised they could buy some covert recording devices easily on the web.
‘No one is doing anything wrong. But it’s funny to think clubs are sending workers to sit in the stands and mingle with normal fans wearing special recording spectacles.’
