A new procedure to treat presbyopia in patients over the age of 45 has been launched by Ultralase.

UltraRenew is reportedly safer and more effective than existing procedures and is minimally invasive. The treatment happens inside the cornea using a femtosecond laser, resulting in no flap-related complications. The recovery period is described as fast, with long-lasting results seen after about 15 seconds of surgery.

Ultralase claimed that patients should be able to throw away their reading glasses within 24 hours of surgery.

Mark Korolkiewicz, Ultralase's clinical service director, said: 'The two-year clinical data shows excellent stability. Early presbyopes must be counselled on their postoperative working distance while their accommodation is still active. End-point presbyopes, say in their early to mid 50s, have no such considerations and simply enjoy the benefits of that stability.'
