Price fixing fines issued in China

Over £1.8m worth of fines have been levied against a number of ophthalmic lens and contact lens manufacturers by a Chinese regulator for allegedly fixing prices and engaging in antitrust behaviour.

Essilor, Johnson & Johnson, Nikon, Bausch+Lomb, and Carl Zeiss were among those fined by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) after its investigation found they had exerted too much influence over prices.

The organisation said the companies either fixed retail prices or restricted the lowest retail prices of goods. In addition, the companies were said to have improperly controlled the terms of product purchasing promotions such as ‘buy three get one free’.
