In an unprecedented move, four optical representative bodies have lined up to support the RNIB's latest campaign to highlight the importance of eye examinations.

Even optometry's regulator the General Optical Council has joined in to back the 'Open Your Eyes' promotion launched this week (see page 8).

In a statement this week ABDO, the AOP, FODO, the College of Optometrists and the GOC commented on the headlines that more than two million people in the UK risk needlessly losing their sight through preventable eye conditions.

They commented that there are 7,300 opticians in Great Britain offering patients 'a very wide choice'.

A spokesman for all five organisations said: 'It is absolutely crucial that the public are aware of the importance of eye health and regular sight tests - arguably eyes should be at the top of their regular health-check list.

'We fully support the RNIB in its campaign to raise awareness and we look to government to expand NHS community eye care services as has already happened in Scotland and Wales.'
