This week's publication of the Health Act 2006 and the Government's acknowledgement of the importance of eye health for all have been welcomed by the optical bodies.
With the Health Bill completing its parliamentary stages on Tuesday, and awaiting Royal Assent, ABDO, the AOP and FODO said that: 'The government's commitment that eye care services will continue to improve is crucial to ensure that all groups in society, especially vulnerable groups such as children and older people, receive the high quality care to maximise their potential and wellbeing throughout their life.'
They welcomed assurances from ministers during the Bill's passage that the NHS sight test fee would remain centrally negotiated and funded, would not be constrained by local budgets, and that contractors would be entitled to a GOS contract subject to national criteria. 'These commitments are important to ensure all patients have access to high-quality eye care services close to their home, with the provider of their choice and that they receive that care promptly.
